Ascona Polo Cup 2024: A weekend full of excitement, emotion & triumph

The Ascona Polo Club has done it again – the Polo Cup 2024 has become an unforgettable experience for players and spectators alike. From 6 to 8 September, the playing field on the shores of Lake Maggiore was transformed into a stage for dramatic matches, thrilling moments and a winner that was only decided after a thrilling penalty shootout on Sunday. But one thing is clear: this year the magic was in the air – and it left no one cold.

Friday: A start with fire

Things kicked off on Friday with three exciting matches that set the tone for the entire weekend. The first match at 16:00 between Styger and Seven was already a source of pure energy on the court. With a score of 13:10, Styger secured the first victory of the tournament.

But the real highlight of the day came later. When the Ascona-Locarno team took on Wetag at 17:30, you could literally feel the tension in the stands. With a final score of 12:17 in Wetag’s favour, it was clear that this team would make a name for itself.

Matteo Beffa, one of the prominent heads of the club, summarised the day aptly with his words: ‘Polo is not just a sport. It is a game of minds and hearts. Every shot, every gallop, every decision on the field is a reflection of the passion we all carry within us.’

Saturday: The evening of surprises

Saturday evening brought the spectators what they love – dramatic twists and turns, glorious victories and narrow defeats. At 19:00, Styger went into the next round against Charly Zenger. Despite a tough fight, Styger lost 12:14, but that was just the beginning of a spectacular evening.

Team Wetag continued their winning streak at 20:30 and defeated Lucid Motors with an impressive 19:13. In the last match of the day at 22:00, Ascona-Locarno finally managed to secure a nerve-wracking 9:8 victory against Seven. The crowd went wild, the tension rose – and the anticipation of the final on Sunday was palpable.

Sunday: Rain, excitement and penalty shootouts

Sunday brought a surprising turn of events: Due to the persistent rainy weather, regular matches on the pitch became impossible. Instead, it was decided to determine the placings through exciting penalty shootouts. However, the bad weather did nothing to dampen the excitement – quite the opposite.

The battle for fifth place between Lucid Motors and Seven began at 11:00 a.m., which Lucid Motors won 8:7 after a thrilling shootout. The match for third place, which was originally planned as a classic game, also ended in a shootout between Styger and Ascona-Locarno. The result: a 2:2 draw.

The grand final at 14:00 was also decided by a penalty shootout. Wetag Christis and Charly Zenger went head-to-head, but in the end Wetag Christis prevailed and secured the coveted Ascona Polo Cup 2024.
